DIY eat in kitchen and bunker
I made this during the pandemic in 2020 because we kept getting alerts of bad storms and I have no basement or middle room to go to for safety in my older home. So I built myself a bunker that is disguised as a eat in kitchen counter.
I purposely built it higher than the kitchen cabinets so I can sit up in the bunker if I wish to. There is a hole in it for easy access to an electrical outlet on the kitchen wall so I can charge my phone and tablet while in here. Also I have holes for airflow. The floor has interlocking gym mat flooring and hooks to hold up a body pillow when not needed. Inside is also a small cooler and to go bag and of course flash lights and batteries.
The counter is anchored to an interior wall and has caulking around the edges. It was built using 2×4’s, screws, 3/4″ plywood, peel and stick floor tiles and foam. Dimensions are 5 x 4 x 4 (L,W,H).
At this point I had only primed it.
Painted to match the kitchen cabinets that I had repainted the year before. Also shown is the new floor tile I installed the year before as well. The bar stools I purchased from Walmart for only $10 each!
Removable foam to keep from bumping into the edges.
In addition to this project I added the bi-fold doors separating the kitchen from the family room, repainted the kitchen and installed the tiles on the walls to match the counter top to this project.
